this was an odd book. The Story was sort of all over the place. and there were parts of it that just made me shake my head. Like (spoiler) when she went down the aisle to marry one man only to find out afterwards that she had married another man! What the hell! the last quarter of the book took a slightly better turn which is why I gave it three stars instead of two. but overall it was not very good. in particular was the inauthenticity. too many "it's" instead of "it is", it was very distracting. they were speaking as if they live in the 21st century which made it difficult to put yourself in the time frame of the story. In addition, American heiresses of the time were highly educated, scholastically as well as well-mannered. When many of them went to England to find husbands they blew the competition away. Because most if not all British aristocratic women were taught very little growing up, they were taught manners and how to be demure and how to get a husband but they were not worldly. so to encounter a character like this one who was clumsy, awkward and said the wrong things at the wrong time was just unrealistic. She was unlady-like and somewhat of a train wreck. Very disappointing.

Bought my first book.. didnt enjoy it as much as mcnaught's and quinn's. Didnt like the heroine's know-it-all aura.. i like trent though.. and the parts after the marriage was stretchy for me... so.. wont buy more...

Eloisa James' books are always perfect in my eyes. I've never been disappointed, and My American Duchess is one of my favorites. There was amazing chemistry between Merry and Trent, right from the beginning. Not only was it great to see the sparks fly between them, but it was just as awesome to see them dance around that chemistry. The differences between Cedric and Trent added a very interesting element to the story. I almost feel bad for enjoying their bickering and feuding, but I really couldn't help myself. It was phenomenal. Merry was definitely a shining star for me in this book. She was fun, smart, and didn't take any crap. She made her own way in society, and I was rooting for her through the whole book. I don't want to forget to mention the cuddly puppies in this book either. Adorable! The only thing bad about this book was that it had to end, but honestly, I thought the ending was marvelous too!
