About this ebook

THE FIRST NOVEL IN THE CLASSIC SERIES OF ALAN LEWRIE NAVAL ADVENTURES

1780: Seventeen-year-old Alan Lewrie is a brash, rebellious young libertine. So much so that his callous father believes a bit of navy discipline will turn the boy around. Fresh aboard the tall-masted Ariadne, Midshipman Lewrie heads for the war-torn Americas, finding--rather unexpectedly--that he is a born sailor, equally at home with the randy pleasures of the port and the raging battles on the high seas. But in a hail of cannonballs comes a bawdy surprise...

The King's Coat introduces us to Alan Lewrie, hero of Dewey Lambdin's acclaimed series of naval adventures, which have often been compared to those by C.S. Forester and Patrick O'Brian.

I wasn't really pleased after finishing this book. I expected something like Master and Commander, instead it read more like Tom Jones. The hero is an unlikable wastrel who's banished to sea after trying to rape his sister. Once in the navy he chases and beds every woman he lays his eyes on. A little hard to believe for a sniveling midshipman. The author spends a great deal of time on each romantic interlude sometimes devoting a dozen pages to it then throws in some time at sea as an interruption. The author also seems very taken with his collection of 18th century naval term, often throwing them in and not quite getting them right. He seems more interested in showing off than telling a story which is what he should be doing. I understand there are 18 books in the series. I think this will be the first and last I buy. If you want Forester or O'Brien, buy them, not this poor imitation.

About the author

DEWEY LAMBDIN is the author of sixteen previous Alan Lewrie novels. A member of the U.S. Naval Institute and a Friend of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England, he spends his free time working and sailing. He makes his home in Nashville, TN, but would much prefer Margaritaville or Murrells Inlet.
