About this ebook

A raw yet humorous memoir detailing the troubled life and mind of an American comic icon, as seen in Netflix’s Cracked Up: The Darrell Hammond Story.

From his harrowing childhood filled with physical and emotional abuse, to a lifetime of alcoholism and self-mutilation, psychiatric hospitalizations and misdiagnoses, to the peak of fame and success as the longest-tenured cast member of Saturday Night Live (where his hilarious dead-on impressions of Bill Clinton, Dick Cheney, Chris Matthews, and a hundred other prominent figures ushered him to the peak of stardom), Darrell Hammond delves into the darkest corners of his life, both in front of and behind the camera, with brutal honesty and fierce comic wit.

Regardless of your connection to the author, this is a great book. Darrell gives raw insight into a loveless childhood at the hands of an abusive mother and a war damaged father. I always loved seeing him on SNL and found him to be "together." Sadly, he was tortured and surrounded himself with addictions and incidents of "cutting." But at 11:30 on Saturday night he became the guy we always counted on for his spot-on impersonations. Without becoming pretentious or a tell all, Darrell shares insight into the inner workings of SNL. This was hard to put down as Darrell keeps to the point without belaboring it and becoming monotonous. It shares his journey through addictions and physical self abuse as well as relationships through to his road to recovery. I cannot recommend it enough.

One of the most poignant autobiographies I've read! Darrell Hammond has an amazing ability to transport readers on a no-holds-barred journey through his suffering and abuse, seeing him grow as a person through life. Absolutely loved it.
