Parece ser que Defoe se inspiró en un caso real: la historia del marinero escocés Alexander Selkirk, que fue abandonado en una isla cercana a la costa de Chile (que hoy se llama «isla Robinson») y logró sobrevivir durante cinco años, hasta que fue rescatado.
