About this ebook

Mars Xi can kill you with her mind, but she'll need more than psychic powers to save her in Killing Gravity, the thrilling science fiction space adventure debut by Corey J. White.

Before she escaped in a bloody coup, MEPHISTO transformed Mariam Xi into a deadly voidwitch. Their training left her with terrifying capabilities, a fierce sense of independence, a deficit of trust, and an experimental pet named Seven. She’s spent her life on the run, but the boogeymen from her past are catching up with her. An encounter with a bounty hunter has left her hanging helpless in a dying spaceship, dependent on the mercy of strangers.

Penned in on all sides, Mariam chases rumors to find the one who sold her out. To discover the truth and defeat her pursuers, she’ll have to stare into the abyss and find the secrets of her past, her future, and her terrifying potential.

There was an attempt here to make an interesting Novella, but the author doesn't seem to understand how to structure the story around that foundation. A novella series like "The Murderbot Diaries" works because the story fits it's Novella structure. It feels like the author of "Killing Gravity" wanted to make a fully fleshed out Novel but, for whatever reason they may have had, decided to jam their story into a novella. Imagine watching starwars, but it's been edited down to a 20 minute version. The characters are all half baked even the main character, the pacing is everywhere, the villain is just a mustache twirling bad guy with no background or motivation behind his actions, and the world building all around flounders. This Novella is also significantly shorter than most others that I've read, which also did not help things. The only character who seems to have any kind of consistency or personality to them is Squid. Definitely not worth the $10 I paid for the audiobook or my time.

There is a lot of potential here, but while fun, this feels very much like the freshman novel it is. The plot is a bit predictable, the heroine too all powerful, and the bad guys are barely more than cardboard cutouts. Not enough to spoil it though, and I look forward to future efforts.

I came across a short review for Killing Gravity in Ellis's Orbital Operations newsletter - it compelled me to buy the book immediately. It was blistering fun! Can't wait for the further adventures of Ocho...
