This collection reminded me of why Chris Claremont was such a revelation in the day. The writing is highly inconsistent (as in, actually difficult to follow at times) except on the Claremont books. Where it's only okay. Lots of dramatic developments; lots of cornball and inconsistent tone.

It was around this time that Claremont's writing style seemed more annoying than anything else as he often repeated phrases and his well ran dry. I swear you could count on the phrase "as much as a _____ as _______" and the internal monologue became overbearing.

When I started reading New Mutants (later to become X-Force) & X-Factor in the late 80's, I was floored at how good the story was, even compared it to 70's books like Giant-Sized X-Men #1, then found that BOTH were written by Chris Claremont. The stories of how Hank became Beastly, Nathan/Cables birth, Rachel, Gambit, & Sinisters introduction, plus the Death of Peter/Colossus' sister Illyiana/Majik wowed & devastated me at the very same time! This is is truly one of the greatest X-Men stories ever written!
