This book establishes the fact that the New Republic is willing to sacrifice unwitting innocent planets on the fringes of the core for both tactical and strategic gains. It foreshadows that the nature of the New Republic established by the Rebellion is not much different from the Galactic Empire that it replaced, "Sacrifice of the few for the greater good, as decided by those in power"
