This book is for the absolute beginner. If you're already solving tactical puzzles and know what good and bad pieces are, backwards pawns etc. You're already beyond this book. I won't say you can't learn anything from it but as my first chess book after about 2 months of seriously playing I was already past the material found in this book. Just a forewarning the book is still rather good and I would recommend it to the absolute beginner.

Excellent book for a beginner, even for an intermediate player. one can learn so much like chess principles are subject to exceptions, time vs material, playing with initiative, trading for non material reasons, how to increase tactical ability, formulating plans however small they may be & methods of implementation. overall one should start his or her introduction to chess by way of thinking process which indeed pandolfini promotes throughout in this outstanding book.
