Ratings and reviews

While not my favorite book in the Cosmere, this is my favorite in the second era of Mistborn. I am biased towards the satisfaction that comes with endings. This book is certainly satisfying, if not as fulfilling as the Stormlight Archive books or the first era of Mistborn. The Cosmere connections were a lot of fun though, but that does come with the caveat of the book being a little less approachable for people who haven't read the whole Cosmere. It's not necessary, but this book, more than any other, truly does benefit from having the expanded context that comes with having read everything. Regardless, I'm sure you'll have a good time.

I understand Sanderson wants to tie in the greater Cosmere too all his novels, but in my opinion, that is the weakest part of his most recent books. Instead of having stand alone series or separate genres to enjoy, it all just muddies them together and they lose their sense of authenticity. Gods can at least fit in these genres, but having off worlders (aliens) and people disclose to main characters that they are from other planets doesn't add to the stories and instead takes away their sense of uniqueness. In this book, technoligically they are in the electrical phase, with hints at new technology that draws from nuclear roots. Introducing gods (as aliens) that talk about shards and other planets just feels out of place. Still enjoying the book, but feel like all of Sanderson's stories have been modified to include the Cosmere. Instead of things happening seperately in each novel, there are these immersion breaking storylines. To each their own. I think it cheapens the work sadly.

I'm sorry but the Sanderlanche here barely made a scratch to my already dwindling interest. I just couldn't bear to read more, so I decided to skim-read. And the ending felt so un-Sanderson-like. To say the least, I've read way way waaaaayyy better books from him–and this book isn't one of them.
