I am a HUGE sucker for a villain with a tragic backstory that is forced into their role but ultimately embraces it! I have not read the series that this is a prequel to but found that wasn't necessary and the story was easy to follow and understand. Bethany's writing has evolved and developed so wonderfully from her first published book, Evalene's Number (which I own a physical copy of!) and I adore her prose here. Very keen to continue reading this series. It is a quick read, so if you're looking for a quick and fun fantasy villain fix, this is a great book to jump into.

After reading the Stolen Kingdom series - a beautifully written series retelling the stories of Aladdin, Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, and Sleeping Beauty - I was excited to continue the journey of the Queen. The Secret Gift gave such great insight on why the Queen is the way she is. Wonderful read which I couldn't put down, and when I did put it down, I couldn't wait until I could get back to the story. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
