The book presents an overview and historic perspectives of a novel scientific field coming of age today: coastal and ocean management. It covers diverse and changing issues, ranging from conflict resolution to governance and ethical-political imperatives, natural disasters and climate change, culminating in coastal and ocean typologies, the basis for a future theory of coasts and oceans. Eighteen chapters, written by two main authors in cooperation with international experts, review 25 years of research. About the author

Bernhard Glaeser is a Professor of Sociology at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of Free University of Berlin. He is the Honorary President of the German Society for Human Ecology, and retired as a Senior Researcher at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. He served on multiple international advisory boards in Germany, the USA, the UK, China and India, and is the founder and co-editor of the book series Routledge Studies in Environment, Culture, and Society.

Marion Glaser is a Research Group Leader at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in Bremen, Germany. In over three decades in development cooperation and research in Brazil, Indonesia, Colombia, Bangladesh and Belize, she was also active in several global coastal and ocean science projects, and served as Vice President of the German Society for Human Ecology. Her current research focuses on sustainability transformations with special interest in coastal livelihoods, equity and transdisciplinary methods.
