I mostly associate the DCU and particularly Gotham with a grim and dark aesthetic, and with all the Batman movies lately it isn't hard to form that image. Which is why Gotham Academy feels like such a fresh new take in that setting, with its brighter coloring palette that still manages to keep a gothic mood - bringing us the complicated world of Gotham through the eyes of Olive Silverlock, whose mother is now confined at Arkham Asylum, and she is having an inexplicable hole in her memory. The story is largely a mystery, with a little gothic elements but still being perfect for the age it is marketed towards. Olive's life is complicated at the Academy, having broken up with her boyfriend but still being friends with his sister, partnering up with the latter to investigate the mystery of a particular part of the Academy campus, and much more secrets revealed within the walls itself. Also, there is the fact that Bruce Wayne is presented as an antagonist in this one, at least for Olive, which makes for an interesting perspective in this series. The artwork is beautiful, and I love that it didn't go the dark and gritty route for the coloring. I am definitely interested in exploring more mysteries at the school along with this adorable bunch of characters.

I enjoy this series a lot. It's Scooby Doo meets Goonies meets Harry Potter meets Batman. It isn't the same old same old superhero book only dealing with kids which I like. It's something different. I highly recommend!

I read the sample and really enjoyed the direction it was going. The art is top notch. Gotham Academy is a refreshing story, it has lovable characters and the setting has so much to offer. It's not your run of the mill comic. The art has a fun, innocent style. I highly recommend it.
