About this ebook

A Study in Scarlet was the career-starting, first Sherlock Holmes story published by Arthur Conan Doyle. Set in 19th-century London, it follows Dr. John Watson, a war veteran, and the enigmatic young Sherlock Holmes, a uniquely gifted detective. Two murders in London have Scotland Yard confounded, and the solution Holmes illuminates transports the reader to America’s Wild West of the 1850s, and beyond. A Study in Scarlet is a seminal work, and one that has transformed the mystery and crime genres. This Essential Classics edition includes a new introduction by Professor Vivian Heller, Ph.D. in literature and modern studies from Yale University.

The first Sherlock Holmes story, and one of the best. In the first half of the book, Watson meets and comes to admire Holmes, who is at at his deductive and sociopathic best while solving a pair of murders. The second half of the book is a dramatic backstory historical fiction novella of love, loss, and revenge set largely in early Mormon Utah. Doyle is an excellent and versatile writer, and both parts work well.

A very interesting book by sir Arthur Conan Doyle but as it was written in 18th century so it is hard to read and understand the new words. So, I do not recommend for new readers. Thank you
