Chekhov wrote across a broad spectrum of genres, and did so quite competently. Chekhov had an uncanny ability to turn depressing stories to heartwarming or charming at the last moment. Like many other Russian authors the fog of sadness is written between the lines, but Chekhov will cast a ray of sunshine in to remind us things aren't always as bad as they seem. By far a favorite author of mine, and a great introduction to 19th century Russian literature. Easier to pick up and read than Dostoevski for most.

For there to be a comprehensive compendium of an author of this caliber at this accessible price is simply a blessing. The table of contents will list stories alphabeticaly or chronologically, and his plays are easy enough to navigate as they are. A must buy for teachers, students, lovers, existentialists, erstwhile revolutionaries and eccentrics alike.
