Democracy in America although written before the Civil War is a complete view of the American system of politics and one of the best views of American style jurisprudence and capitalism. Alexis de Tocqueville had such an extraordinary insight into the American people that he, prescient as he was, foresaw the political process far into the future. To read these books is to immerse oneself in the very beginnings of our nation. And to do so, from the viewpoint of a foreigner who had foresight enough to see both the good and the problematic difficulties that would come if our nation remained stagnant without growth in the future.
