This was published in French as Les Trois Mousquetaires in 1844.  As a historical romance, The Three Musketeers relates the adventures of four fictional characters who lived under the French kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV of the 17th and early 18th centuries. The story begins with D’Artagnan arrival in Paris and his involvement in three duels with Athos, Porthos, and Aramis — the three musketeers. When D’Artagnan serves an apprenticeship before he can become a musketeer. The escapades of the four are played out against a background of court intrigue involving the powerful cardinal Richelieu.

This book has also been adapted numerous times for film. Among 250 books to come from this author, The Three Musketeers is the most famous. The plot of the novel moves with the historical narrative and its pace carries the reader on a joyous journey. It is replete with teasers and cliffhangers.


About the author

Alexander Dumas was one of the most popular French authors of the 19th century. This prolific author succeeded in gaining a great reputation first as a dramatist and then as a historical novelist, especially for such works namely The Three Musketeers. He also wrote several memoirs, which recount the events of his life and also provide an insight into French literary life during the period. Though he continued to write plays, his main interest was the creation of an exciting story set against background of history. The Three Musketeers is a a romance about four heroes in the age of Cardinal Richelieu; “Twenty Years After”; The Count of Monte Cristo; Ten Years Later and “The Black Tulip”.
