A masterpiece. I tend to be skeptical and especially critical of authors who have been praised so heartily. Sometimes that skepticism is warranted and fed. Not this time. Alan Moore's work on the Swamp Thing is brilliant, perhaps more brilliant than all the other works for which you know him. Here, he pre-sages his wildly conceptual work Promethia. Here, he explores what Watchmen's Dr. Manhattan would have experienced trying to create new life. Most of all, however, here, he takes the Swamp Thing and puts our hero through the primal comic-book adventures we enjoy so much while flavoring the read with tertiary concepts that dance upon the heightened palates we've developed as more seasoned readers. Stephen Bissette and John Totleben capture Moore's concepts and both root it for us to see and relaxed it for us to visualize. Enough cannot be said about their work here, which grew on me as the comic continued and bent to Moore's playfulness. Just excellent.
