I am currently reading this book and, gloomy and dark are perfect descriptions. This book gives me a very precise and detailed view of a miserable, young mother in an unsuccessful and unhappy marriage. Her life may not have been so unpleasant and her husband been more considerate and compassionate for his family their hopes. After reading just the first chapter, I won't not want to visit this time era.

About the author

A. Manette Ansay is the author of eight books, including Vinegar Hill, Midnight Champagne (a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award), and Blue Water. She has received the Pushcart Prize, two Great Lakes Book Awards, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. She teaches in the MFA writing program at the University of Miami.
