About this ebook

This book is a sequel to Electromagnetism: Theory (Volume I). It has been updated to cover some additional aspects of theory and nearly all modern applications. The semi-historical approach is unchanged, but further historical comments have been introduced at various places in the book to give a better insight into the development of the subject as well as to make the study more interesting and palatable to the students. • Emphasis on practical aspects of wave guidance and radiation • Sections on analysis of cylindrical dielectric waveguide (e.g. of optical fibres) in Chapters 18 and 22 • Tensor formulation of Maxwell’s Stresses • Extension of Principle of Duality to time varying field problems as well as to non electrical systems • Extrapolation of the method of images from partially embedded conduction current elements to discontinuous current elements with displacement currents in antennae problems • Explanation of the physical basis of the mechanism of electromagnetic radiation • Analysis of wave polarization including complete and partial polarization • Effects of finite geometrical dimensions of the conducting media on the skin-effect phenomenon • Types of apertures in receiving antennae The book is designed to serve as a core text for students of electrical engineering. Besides, it will be useful to postgraduate physics students as well as research engineers and design and development engineers in industries.

About the author

ASHUTOSH PRAMANIK graduated in Electrical Engineering from Glasgow University after obtaining a degree in M.Sc. (Pure Maths) from Nagpur University. He also holds an M.Sc. (Engg.) degree from the University of Birmingham and a Ph.D. from the same university for his research on developing analytical solutions for three-dimensional eddy-current problems. He has been a Research Engineer with the English Electric, Stafford (now part of GEC, UK), Visiting Industrial Lecturer as well as I.C.I. Research Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, University of Birmingham, and Lecturer at the University of Leeds. After nearly 18 years of research and teaching experience in UK, Dr. Pramanik in 1976 joined the Corporate R&D Division of BHEL where he successfully established the Electromagnetic Phenomena Laboratory. Throughout his professional career, he has been instrumental in making several scientific contributions in the field of electromagnetism. He is the Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and of National Academy of Sciences (FNAE and FNASc.). He has been a Chartered Mathematician of UK and a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications {C. Math., FIMA (UK)}. He has been nominated as International Engineer of the year 2008 by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge (UK). Dr. Pramanik has been D.J. Gandhi Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay. Currently he is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the College of Engineering, Pune.
