블랙유머의 대가, 웃음과 유머로 절망에 맞선 유머리스트이자 휴머니스트, 하루키가 존경하고 박찬욱이 사랑한 작가. 1922년 미국 인디애나주 인디애나폴리스의 독일계 미국인 가정에서 태어났다. 『자동 피아노』(1952)로 장편 데뷔 후 『고양이 요람』 『제5도살장』 등을 세상에 선보이며 미국문학사에 한 획을 그은 반전反戰 작가로 자리 매김했다. 이후 왕성한 활동을 이어가다 『타임퀘이크』(1997)를 마지막으로 소설가로서 은퇴를 선언했다. 2007년 맨해튼 자택에서 사고로 머리를 크게 다치고 몇 주 후 사망했다.
