About the author
1818년 러시아 오룔 출생 고골리의 영향을 받아 시와 단편소설을 썼다. 1855년과 1862년 사이에 투르게네프의 소설은 완숙의 경지에 이르렀고, 루딘(1856), 귀족의 보금자리(1859), 전야(1860), 아버지와 아들(1862)등이 출간되었다. 대표작 중 하나인 ‘아버지와 아들’에 대한 적대적 반응 때문에 투르게네프는 결국 1856년에 러시아를 떠나게 된다. 처음엔 독일에서 살다가 런던으로 이사했고 ‘아버지와 아들’이 커다란 성공을 거두게 된다. 1871년 파리에 정착하여, 그곳에서 죽을 때까지 살게 된다. 1883년 9월 3일 파리근교에서 사망했다.
