About the author
톨스토이는 1828년 8월 야스나야 폴랴나에서 백작가문의 넷째아들로 태어났다. 하지만, 2살 때는 어머니를, 9살 때는 아버지를 잃어 어린 나이에 남의 손에서 자란 톨스토이는 죽음이나 인생에 대한 생각을 어려서부터 하게 되었다. 1844년 카잔대학 동양어 과에 입학했으나 중퇴하고 고향으로 돌아갔다. 이후 농사개혁에 뜻을 두었으나 실패하고 그 환멸감에 술, 여자, 도박에 빠져 생활하기도 했다. 1852년 처녀작 유년 시대를 필두로 그는 작가생활을 시작했다. 이후 눈보라 지주의 아침 천년시대 등을 발표했다. 1862년 소피아와 결혼을 했으며 전쟁과 평화 안나 카레니나, 부활 등 불후의 대작이 연이어 발표되었다. 하지만 참회 이후 종교적인 작품 저술에만 몰두하는 톨스토이와 소피아 사이의 갈등이 심화하고 톨스토이는 부인 몰래 자신의 저작 모두를 막내딸 알렉산드라에게 남긴다는 유서를 작성했다. 막내딸과 의사만을 데리고 떠난 며칠간의 가출 도중 급성폐렴에 걸린 톨스토이는 1910년 11월 7일 작은 간이역에서 숨을 거두었으며 생전의 유언에 따라 묘비도 십자가도 없이 자작나무 숲 속에 잠들어 있다.
