Осенью 1866 г. на страницах парижского журнала «Revue Naionale» появился новый роман французского писателя Максима Дюкана «Утраченные силы» («Les Forces perdues»). В середине марта 1867 г. роман вышел отдельно, а вскоре после этого Дюкан обратился к Тургеневу, находившемуся тогда на родине, с письмом, в котором просил его порекомендовать «Утраченные силы» для перевода и издания на русском языке. Тургенев откликнулся на просьбу Дюкана...
