very addictive, dove into each character just enough. the ending was very weak for such a strong book. with that in mind, I'd still recommend

Wonderful book that takes you on a familiar familial journey. For some it may shed some light on behaviors and customs of people reared in the deep South as well as those born during the 1940's and 1950's timeframes. Just a deep heartfelt story that will resonate with Black folks no matter where they came from.

Breath-taking story of cultural and biological gender constructs in African American society. A thought provocaning read.

About the author

Daniel Black was raised in Blackwell, Arkansas, and now teaches at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. Daniel earned his PhD in African American studies from Temple University. He is the author of Listen to the Lambs, They Tell Me of a Home, Twelve Gates to the City, and The Sacred Place, among other books.

Ron Butler is a Los Angeles-based actor and voice artist with over a hundred film and television credits (playing everything from brooding doctors to screwball hipsters). Ron works regularly as a commercial and animation voice-over artist and has voiced a wide variety of audiobooks.
