About this audiobook

OVER 2 MILLION COPIES SOLD OF THE #1 BESTSELLING SERIES!

Don't miss this New York Times bestselling "impossible to put down" (Buzzfeed) novel with deadly stakes, thrilling twists, and juicy secrets--perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out.

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why -- or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch -- and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

The story and the characters are good, but a lot of the mystery and puzzles were so obvious I was screaming at the main character to just put two and two together. In regards to the settling, I don't think the author has spent any time in Texas or around anyone from the south. I understand that it's fiction, but if you aren't going to use the setting, then why specify it at all? The fact that they mentioned she had inherited a "Texas NFL Team" as an afterthought made me cringe so hard. As to the audiobook specifically, I think the reader watched Joe Dirt and figured everyone in the south sounded like that. It made the sexy leading male characters sound like they were nasally trailer park yokels... I couldn't get into the romance AT ALL. Imagine a man with rippling abs and a square jawline and sopping wet hair taking you into his arms and talking like Ernest! Honestly I was kind of disappointed with all the high reviews. That being said, I did listen to the whole thing!
