AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 3 Narration 4 Story 3 Return to Gatlin where we’ve come to the point where Ethan, Lena and Link have finished high school, and are ready to move on. That is, until Ridley returns to ‘catch up’ which always means stir up (she can’t help it) trouble, most particularly with Link. She’s still, despite her near-constant obsession with him, really figured out her feelings, and the push-pull of their relationship is truly the focus here. Link as the ‘stoner-type’ and a bit of a good old boy.. affable, perhaps not so bright, but easy to like Link who has dreams of being a songwriter with a talent that is latent and developing if I’m being nice. Ridley, on the other hand, is a dark caster: using her sexuality to get what she wants – usually all the attention in the room. Ridley is unhappy and a bit unsettled, being what she is , people are always wary of her and her abilities, and from moments where she wants to change, to others where she embraces and enjoys the danger and darkness, she’s always fun to watch – from a distance. In this story, we are getting a taste of Ridley and her obsession / feelings for Link are a big muddle – unfortunately, that is completely apparent in this story as her emotions and their relationship is the focus here: and Ridley has never been logical at the best of times – and things aren’t at the best right now. But the one constant is her attraction / need / desire for Link – and his mix of desire and befuddlement with that desire that he’s experiencing. An interesting approach to introduce the world as the four try to separate from Gatlin and move into adulthood with all of the challenges, changing loyalties and new adventures to come. Narration for this story is provided by Kevin T. Collins – and I’m most familiar with his work in tandem on the second book in this series. He’s got a solid understanding of the story, even when it goes a bit pear-shaped, and he helps to balance the often frenetic pacing of Ridley’s thoughts and emotions, keeping a bit of the faster pace without overlooking or ignoring important moments. His voice is well-suited to narration, as he slipped neatly into each character that appeared, feeling unique and adding the varying levels of dangerous and different required. I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Hachette Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
