Ratings and reviews

In all honesty, I hated this book, but not because it isn't excellent. I am just not its target audience. The way the author smoothly transitions from something incredibly mundane and relentlessly tedious, to incredibly charged and feral is top tier. This book also has an accurate description of what it can be like to engage with the world of academic fine art. I would say this book is perfect for anyone interested in the key topics: metamorphosis, motherhood, feminine rage, and performance. It is perhaps not ideal for readers who are seeking a more fantastical work of fiction or a darker story with themes of horror or violence. Overall, 10/10 very impressive story.

RACHEL YODER is a founding editor of draft: the journal of process. She holds M.F.A's from the University of Arizona (fiction) and the University of Iowa (nonfiction), where she was an Iowa Arts Fellow. Her stories and essays have been published in literary journals such as The Kenyon Review and The Missouri Review, as well as national outlets such as The New York Times, The Sun, and Lit Hub. She lives in Iowa City with her husband and son.
