About this audiobook

Jack was eleven when the berserkers loomed out of the fog and nabbed him. "It seems that things are stirring across the water," the Bard had warned. "Ships are being built, swords are being forged." "Is that bad?" Jack had asked, for his Saxon village had never before seen berserkers. "Of course. People don't make ships and swords unless they intend to use them." The year is A.D. 793. In the next months, Jack and his little sister, Lucy, are enslaved by Olaf One-Brow and his fierce young shipmate, Thorgil. This book is truly magnificent. It's truly on par with The Hobbit. Understand that I am a harsh reviewer and VERY hard to please, so I do not give this review likely. It lacks the story teller voice of The Hobbit's read that I so truly enjoyed, but it makes up for it in cultural depth and a true understanding of life that I cannot understate. The plot weave was nothing short of mastery, and I laughed and cried with this book. I loved every moment of it. While reading this book, I felt a slightly primal awakening within myself. It was expressed by a dull ache for the way that life used to be in the ancient times. Despite how awful those times were, I felt the ache to return to them. I've come to the realization that people today might have better conditions, but they don't truly live. It's as if, by removing ourselves from a lot of the strife and turmoil, we've forgotten what life truly is. I'll always remember this story. I'm glad to have read it.
