It's an acceptable adaptation of the film, but there is a lot of stuff missing. Spoilers ahead I guess. Several important lines of dialog from the film are missing; no explanation of why phasers wouldnt be used to vaporize gorkon's assassins, no scene where Uhura tries to translate klingon, Scotty never apprehends the assassin in the finale, there are no cries of havoc to let slip the dogs of war, and the cast send off with Kirk's iconic captain's log is nowhere in sight. Overall, the audiobook captures the main themes and overall plot of the film, but the omissions are glaring. As stated, it is an acceptable adaptation; with the exception of the prologue chapter, it does virtually nothing to expand on what was in the film, and tells a somewhat incomplete story. James Doohan did well with what he was given though.
