About this audiobook

The Island of Doctor Moreau is the narration of Edward Prendick, a shipwrecked man who finds himself on a mysterious island full of humanoid animal creatures. He comes to find that these creatures are the work of Dr. Moreau, a man who experiments in vivisection, and his assistant Montgomery.

The story of Dr. Moreau’s island began as an article in the January, 1895 issue of Saturday Review. It was later adapted into a novel. Its themes reflect concerns growing in the society of the day, like the cruelty of vivisection, degenerationism, and the theory of evolution.

This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

The auto narration can be a bit janky at times (distinctly remember it spelling out the onomatopoeia "yawp"), but overall its performance was fine, especially with it coming in under 4 hours, I believe. I'd never read or listened to anything by H. G. Wells. I'd only seen some of the movies. But this was fantastic. Without giving too much, the story tackles concepts of medical ethics and inhumane experimentation and had such good imagery and description of sci-fi creatures. Definitely recommend!

I enjoyed listening to this story, I must admit I wasn't ready for it to be so.. dark, but it was a great story and the audio was amazingly clear and at times captured the emotions of the characters. I hope Google can make more audio books like it in the future. Thanks heaps

the wording took some time to adjust to but so much better than any of the theatrical versions. give it a chance, especially if you watched the movie versions.
