About this audiobook

Penguin Classics presents Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, adapted for audio and available as a digital download as part of the Penguin English Library series. Read by the actress Juliet Stevenson.

"May you not rest, as long as I am living. You said I killed you - haunt me, then"

Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange on the bleak Yorkshire moors, is forced to seek shelter one night at Wuthering Heights, the home of his landlord. There he discovers the history of the tempestuous events that took place years before: of the intense passion between the foundling Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and her betrayal of him. As Heathcliff's bitterness and vengeance is visited upon the next generation, their innocent heirs must struggle to escape the legacy of the past.

Part of a series of vintage recordings taken from the Penguin Archives. Affordable, collectable, quality productions - perfect for on-the-go listening.

It's well read and the narrator is great at both reading the piece with emotion and creating differences with each character. The one problem I have is the length. Maybe because my physical book is a different edition from this one but the story seems to be missing/skipping some passages. I thought it was strange at first that it finished in 2hrs and when I looked in my version, parts were being skipped. So, it's good for the way the narrator read it and a quick look into the story for the price, but it isn't the whole thing.

About the author

Emily Jane Brontë (1818-1848) was the fifth of six children, in a family which would go on to change the landscape of English fiction. Aged just three when her mother died, Emily was sent with her three older sisters to the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge. While this experience drove her sister Charlotte to pen Jane Eyre, Emily's youth left her unscathed. Returning home, Emily and her younger sister Anne invented the imaginary island of Gondal, an idea which would serve as inspiration years later throughout her poetic career. Her remarkable only novel, Wuthering Heights, stands apart in Victorian fiction as a passionate account of self-destructive love.
