Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther
Sentimental novel in letters, written in 1774. The motif of Goethe's novel, inspired by the death of his friend Karl Wilhelm Ieruzalema suffering from love for a married woman, and committed suicide. The novel immediately became a bestseller, and has caused Europe's wave of similar suicides that has been called the Werther effect. This effect was so strong that in some countries the authorities banned the distribution of the book.
